Becoming an Expert

One of the most coveted roles in our society is that of an expert. Experts are not just average people. They command respect, and get it. People hang on their every word, and make them their go-to source for information. Often, experts can create wonderful new income streams, because their information is that valuable.

Lets face it. If we want to solve a problem, we look for an expert. If we want advice, we seek out an expert. And if we want to stay on track during a particularly arduous process yep, same person the expert.

More than ever before, people want to be perceived as experts. They understand that there is a willing audience for their work, and all they have to do is package and sell that information to as wide a market as possible. But theres a lot more to being an expert than just calling yourself one.

The word expert derives from the Latin expertus, meaning, to try. As this word passed from Old French to Middle English, it was often used as a noun, to mean a person with great skill or knowledge of a certain subject, or an adjective, to mean demonstrating great skill or knowledge of a certain subject. Thats also how it survives in our present-day understanding of the word.

Whats interesting about this mini-lesson in etymology is that, at our cores, we are all experts. We all try various fields, until we find the one that make us happiest, or the one for which we show the greatest aptitude. When we find something were good at, we start to glow. Nothing seems outside our reach. The task seems to take shape all by itself. Athletes, performers and other creative people often describe their amazing feats as being done with very little conscious effort. The classical composer Beethoven even said, I have never thought of writing for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out; that is the reason why I compose.

Because of this, calling ourselves experts rarely works. We are free do this all we want, but only when others trust us enough to come to us for information that can help solve their most intimate problems has this really taken shape in the world. So becoming an expert starts with some serious internal work.

What are you good at? How do you assert your authority? What have you mastered? In which field do you show the greatest proficiency?

After all, we all may want to be muscle-studded athletes or gorgeous supermodels, but is that what were really good at? Is our greatest proficiency throwing a football or striding confidently down a catwalk? Probably not.

Instead, we all have skills were aware of, or which may be lying dormant inside us. The trick is to tease out your inherent expertise, without crushing your creativity in the process. Because becoming an expert demands that we unleash the creative side of our brains.

This may seem counter-intuitive to some, because most of us are taught that creativity is analogous to finger-paintingall over the page, without rhyme or reason. Business and making money are the purview of the left brain, which strives to create order amidst chaos.

But if youre a true entrepreneur, using guerilla marketing tactics, youre probably a little of both. You have a drive to create something that caters to your unique set of skills, and betters the overall quality of life. But you also have the desire, along with the methodology, to generate some serious income.

By establishing yourself as an expert in a particular area, you get to serve both needs. Your creative, or right brain, side is fed by constructing books, workshops and products that solve common societal problems. Your rational, or left brain, side gets to see your finances improve as your books, workshops and products help others to live richer and more rewarding lives.

Of course, the first step to becoming an expert is to give yourself permission to be an expert, not just call yourself one. We may feel that we know a particular subject matter fairly well, or that weve had a certain amount of experience with it. But how do we know when weve become experts? Is there a line we suddenly cross? Does a bolt of lightning descend from the sky?

Not by a long shot. We know we have achieved expert status when we can honestly say that we have more familiarity with a particular subject matter than most people. There will always be someone that knows more than we do. There will always be someone smarter. But there is only one you, with your ideas and your unique and creative ability to help others.

The psychologist Erich Fromm said, Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties. This is definitely true for entrepreneurs and guerilla marketers. We do not know how a particular book, workshop or product will turn out, or if it will be widely accepted by our intended audience. What we do know is that we have a burning desire to exercise our creativity, and that that need, to let go of our certainties and take the leap, is more important, and more life-affirming, than anything else.

Experts know this feeling intimately, and thats why we instinctively trust thembecause they have gone, quite willingly, where few would dare to tread.

How can you update the furniture and bedroom decor in your home so that it brings you into the modern era without doing away with all of your classic objects? Here are a few places you can start to maintain your style and still make it appear more modern.

Start Small.

Don't ditch your furniture or knock out walls. Start with small changes. For example, you can update a room by simply adding a few accents, such as a throw rug to bring more color into a room full of earth tones. Pastels and earth tones are very classic colors, and adding splashes of bright reds, golds, greens, and blues can update the area without getting rid of the furniture style. To bring the room together, add matching throw pillows so that the splash of color carries over to the couch or bed (depending on the room).

Stop Thinking Big.

Classic style doesn't have to mean huge and imposing furniture, and it certainly doesn't have to include expensive antiques. Whatever it is that you particularly enjoy, you can most likely find that element implemented into a more modern design. We have all heard the jokes and negative comments surrounding lawyers but have you ever wondered how it all got started. Just as with any profession, there is bad and good. Are there unethical, incompetent attorneys? Of course! Just as there are unethical, incompetent plumbers, physicians, and restaurant workers. However, for some inexplicable reason, it seems lawyers have had more than their fair share of bad. The complexity of the law and the demand for legal services from the boardroom to the coat room validate that the profession does have value, so why the bad press?

Well lets begin with fees. The hourly bill may just have been the beginning of the end for the legal profession. No one is in a good mood when an hourly meter is running, particularly when you cant control the number of hours that you purchase! Traditionally, Lawyers have relied on the hourly rate, as their standard for billing. With this billing arrangement, the law firm would maintain a record of everything done for you to include phone calls, written letters, court appearances, consultations, etc. You are then billed an agreed upon hourly fee for all of the time that was spent working on your behalf. In addition, you could also incur additional expenses such as transportation, document fees, even phone calls. While this practice is standard in many professions, many consumers believe that attorneys inflate expenses in an effort to make additional profit.

In truth, most service providers use an hourly rate to calculate a fee. In example, an accountant might quote you a fee of $250.00 to review your taxes. The fee is not out of line with your geographic area and the accountant comes highly recommended so you opt to hire him/her at this rate. What you may not realize is that the $250 flat fee may be based on the accountants knowledge that the review will take 2.5 hours of time at $100 per hour.

Many attorneys have become a bit more market savvy and offer alternative billing arrangements. Rather than hourly bills and separate expense charges, they may offer case rates, retainer agreements and other solutions. The key is in providing value for the dollar charged, and creating long term relationships.

Another area that has eroded the reputation of lawyers is the unfortunate lapses in ethical behavior. While most attorneys do in fact adhere to the standards of law, the few bad apples have made it difficult for the public to trust lawyers. For example, in the state of South Carolina a young man was on trial for a murder that most believe he never committed. His family sold their home, cars, and gathered all the cash possible to hire a good defense lawyer. Believing their son was in the best hands possible, they discovered that the prosecuting attorney was married to their lawyers sister and that pertinent information had been shared, resulting in a mistrial. As you can imagine, this put a black mark against those attorneys, as well as others who were innocent but within the same community.

Personal injury law has been another source of questionable ethics. Billboard and commercial advertisements abound with the promise of high dollar settlements for your case. This marketing tactic only adds to the negative perception of the legal profession, as it makes them appear as ethical as snake oil salesmen.

Additionally, most of us have heard the horror stories about attorneys collaborating back room deals with physicians. The attorneys that engage in unethical practices deserve to be drummed right out of the profession. There are dishonest professionals in any field. We can look to education for current examples. There seems to be a spate of sex scandals involving schoolteachers, yet, the four cases that have been highlighted in the news within the past year does not mean all schoolteachers are sex offenders.

The same is true with lawyers. Yes, we have seen cases in which some are not honest and sadly, those are the cases exploited through the media. What you do not hear much of are stories about the reputable attorneys that solve cases and help improve or even change lives. While the public may not be quite ready to elevate lawyers to hero status maybe, just maybe we can start a kinder, gentler trend of being a little nicer.

Don't Get Caught With Google Adsense Click Fraud

Many web site owners are getting their Google Adsense account terminated when they have done nothing wrong to deserve the punishment. Considering the money that they are getting from Adsense, they would certainly want to get back into it.

It is that same consideration why the Google Adsense click fraud is thought of and why many people are getting into it.

Keep your Adsense off on pop ups and pop unders. Your ads should not be displayed on content sites that promote illegal activity or tampering of the legal rights of other people or business. Included in this are the content that is considered adult and gambling ones. If you think that you may be breaking this rule, immediately remove your content or Adsense from the web page.

Be truthful and confess up to Google about times when you might have clicked on your own as, whether accidentally or intentionally. Or the times when you have done something that is against the Terms of Service that they are implementing. Be honest about anything that you may have done that is wrong. Confessing is way better than Google learning about it eventually. It would mean eventual termination and no getting back what you have worked so hard for.

Do not tell your family or friends about Adsense on your website. Chances are they may start clicking on them to help you make money without you knowing it. They may be doing more harm to you than help by trying it in the first place.

If ever someone you know chanced upon your Adsense, make sure they understand that they cannot click on your ads under any circumstances. It would be wise to brief them on important things about Adsense and what not to do with them.
